Airalo eSIM mobile data plans let you buy prepaid mobile data for a destination, install the plan digitally on an eSIM-compatible phone, and connect to a supported local network when you arrive. You choose a country, region or global plan, select the data allowance and validity period, install the eSIM through the Airalo app or a QR code, then set Airalo as your phone's mobile data line.
Most Airalo plans are data-only. They provide internet access for maps, messaging apps, email, browsing and other online services. Some plans also include calls and SMS, but the plan details must specifically show Data, Voice & Text.

What Does an Airalo eSIM Plan Include?
An Airalo package normally includes four things:
- Coverage location: The country, region or group of countries where the plan works.
- Data allowance: The total amount of mobile data included.
- Validity period: How long the package remains active.
- Plan type: Data-only or data with calls and texts.
A fixed-data plan gives you one total allowance for the full validity period. For example, a 5 GB, 15-day plan provides 5 GB to use during those 15 days. It does not provide 5 GB each day. You can use the full allowance on the first day if you want to.
Unused data normally expires when the package ends. If the eSIM supports top-ups, you may be able to add another package without installing a new eSIM.
Fixed Data Versus Unlimited Data
A fixed-data plan makes it easier to track your spending because the allowance is set. An unlimited-data plan removes the stated data limit, but Airalo says some unlimited plans may reduce connection speed after you reach a specified usage threshold. Check the plan's additional information before buying.
What Is the Difference Between Local, Regional and Global Airalo Plans?
The main difference is the area where the eSIM works.
- Local eSIM: Designed for one country, such as Italy or Japan.
- Regional eSIM: Works across several countries in a defined region, such as Europe or Asia.
- Global eSIM: Covers multiple countries and regions worldwide.
A local plan is usually the simplest choice for a single-country trip. A regional plan can be more convenient when you are crossing borders. A global plan suits an itinerary that covers several regions and would require multiple local plans.
The exact countries and supported networks are listed in each plan's details.
How Do You Install and Activate an Airalo eSIM?
To use an Airalo eSIM, check your phone, buy a plan, install the eSIM over an internet connection and select it for mobile data.
1. Check That Your Phone Is Compatible
Your phone must:
- Support eSIM technology.
- Be carrier-unlocked or network-unlocked.
- Not be jailbroken or rooted.
On an iPhone, look for Add eSIM in Cellular or Mobile Data settings. On Samsung devices, check SIM Manager. On Google Pixel devices, look for the option to download a new eSIM.
Phone models can vary by region, so check the exact model rather than relying only on the device name.
2. Buy a Plan for Your Destination
You can buy an Airalo eSIM through the Airalo app or website. Select your destination, compare the available packages and check:
- Supported countries and networks
- Data allowance
- Validity period
- Activation policy
- Whether calls and SMS are included
- Whether top-ups or renewals are available
Airalo delivers the eSIM and installation instructions in the My eSIMs section of your account.
3. Install the eSIM Over Wi-Fi
Install the eSIM before departure while connected to reliable Wi-Fi or another internet connection. Airalo supports three installation methods:
- Direct installation through the app, where available
- QR code installation
- Manual installation by entering the eSIM details in your phone's settings
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile. You do not insert a physical card. After installation, the Airalo plan appears as an additional mobile line on your phone.
4. Select Airalo for Mobile Data
When you arrive in the coverage area:
- Turn on the Airalo eSIM line.
- Select Airalo as the mobile data line.
- Follow the connection instructions in the Airalo app.
- Turn on data roaming for the Airalo line if the plan requires it.
- Let the phone select a supported network, or choose one manually if necessary.
Some Airalo eSIMs require a specific APN, or Access Point Name. The Airalo app shows the APN details when manual configuration is needed. If no APN is listed, the eSIM should configure automatically.
When Does an Airalo Plan Start?
For most Airalo packages, the validity period starts when the eSIM connects to a supported mobile network in its coverage area. Some packages start as soon as the eSIM is installed, even if you are still at home. The plan's Validity Policy sets the rule for that package.
You can often install an Airalo eSIM before your flight without using its validity days early. Check the individual plan first because activation rules differ.
Some eSIMs also have a recycling policy. This may require you to connect and start using the eSIM within a specified period after purchase.
Does Airalo Include a Phone Number, Calls or Text Messages?
Most Airalo eSIMs are data-only and do not include a phone number, standard calls or SMS. You can still use data-based services such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal and other internet calling or messaging apps.
Some Airalo plans include calls and texts. These are marked Data/Calls/Texts or Data, Voice & Text in the package information. Certain plans provide a new phone number. A data-only plan does not replace your existing number.
You can usually keep your primary SIM active for calls and SMS while using Airalo for data. Your regular carrier may still charge for roaming, calls or text messages abroad. Check its international policy before travelling, or disable the primary line and its data roaming.
How Do You Avoid Accidental Roaming Charges?
To make sure your phone uses Airalo instead of your regular carrier:
- Set Airalo as the default mobile data line.
- Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM.
- Disable automatic mobile data switching.
- Consider disabling your primary SIM while abroad.
- Keep the Airalo line enabled only when you need mobile data.
On some Android phones, roaming settings apply to all active SIMs. If the Airalo plan requires data roaming, disabling your primary SIM is the safer way to stop your regular carrier from connecting to a foreign network.
Can You Top Up an Airalo eSIM?
Many Airalo eSIMs support top-ups. In My eSIMs, select the relevant eSIM and choose Top Up if another package is available. Some plans also support renewals, which can automatically purchase another package when the remaining data reaches a specified level.
A top-up does not necessarily extend the original validity period. Airalo says that a package's validity period cannot be extended, so check whether the top-up creates a new validity period or adds data under the existing package terms.
Can You Use Airalo as a Hotspot?
You can use an Airalo eSIM for Personal Hotspot or tethering when your phone and the local network support it. Hotspot data comes from your Airalo allowance, so sharing the connection can use data quickly. Some devices require the Airalo APN to be entered in the Personal Hotspot settings.
What Are the Main Airalo Limitations?
Before buying, check these points:
- An Airalo eSIM works only within its listed coverage area.
- A data-only plan does not provide standard mobile calls or SMS.
- A fixed data allowance covers the full validity period, not each day.
- Unused data normally expires with the package.
- An installed Airalo eSIM is generally tied to one device.
- Removing the eSIM may prevent you from installing it again.
- The phone must be compatible and unlocked.
- Network performance depends on the local partner network, coverage and congestion.
Airalo says its eSIMs are designed for use on one device and normally cannot be transferred to another phone. Do not delete a working eSIM until you are sure you no longer need it.
Bottom Line
Airalo is a prepaid travel data connection. Choose a plan that covers your destination, install it over Wi-Fi, select it as your mobile data line when you arrive and use internet calling or messaging apps if the plan is data-only.
For one country, choose a local eSIM. For several countries in one region, choose a regional plan. Choose a plan with calls and texts only when you need a separate number or standard cellular calling. Before buying, check the activation policy, supported networks, data allowance and roaming instructions.
