An eSIM activation failure is usually a problem with the phone, carrier plan, or activation code. The eight checks below cover the most common causes, including an unsupported or locked phone, no internet connection, an invalid QR code, outdated software, and incomplete carrier provisioning.

eSIM Activation Problems at a Glance

What you see Most likely cause Best next step
"eSIM not supported" Your phone model, region, or carrier does not support eSIM Check device and carrier compatibility
"Unable to activate" A carrier, network, or software problem Connect to Wi-Fi, restart, update the phone, then contact the carrier
QR code will not scan The code is invalid, expired, or incorrect Request a new QR code from the carrier
eSIM installs but shows "No Service" The line is not enabled or the carrier has not completed activation Turn on the line and ask the carrier to check provisioning
Transfer from another phone fails The old phone, new phone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or carrier transfer is not ready Update both phones and retry the transfer
"Emergency calls only" No active eSIM or physical SIM is connected to the network Check the SIM settings, then contact the carrier

1. Check That Your Phone and Carrier Support eSIM

An eSIM is not available on every phone, regional model, or mobile plan. Apple says eSIM setup options vary by iPhone model, country, region, and carrier. Google says support depends on the Pixel model and carrier. Samsung also notes that some carriers do not support eSIM on particular Galaxy devices.

Check that:

  • Your exact phone model supports eSIM.
  • Your carrier supports eSIM for that model.
  • Your phone is not locked to another carrier.
  • Your mobile plan is active and eligible for eSIM.
  • The phone was not imported from a region with different eSIM restrictions.

On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for an EID. If the phone has no EID or no Add eSIM option under cellular settings, it may not support eSIM. A software or hardware problem is another possibility.

2. Connect the Phone to Wi-Fi Before Activating

Many phones need Wi-Fi or another internet connection to download the eSIM profile and contact the carrier's activation servers. Apple requires a Wi-Fi network or hotspot for most iPhone eSIM setups.

Before trying again:

  1. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
  2. Turn off any VPN.
  3. Turn Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then turn it off.
  4. Restart the phone.
  5. Try the activation again.

If you are using a travel eSIM, install it while you still have Wi-Fi access. Some travel eSIMs can be installed before your trip and enabled after arrival, depending on the provider's instructions.

3. Update the Phone's Software and Carrier Settings

Outdated software can stop a phone from recognizing an eSIM or completing carrier activation. Apple recommends using the latest iOS version available for the iPhone. A carrier settings update may also appear under Settings > General > About.

Try these steps:

  • iPhone: Open Settings > General > Software Update, then Settings > General > About.
  • Google Pixel: Open Settings > System > Software update.
  • Samsung Galaxy: Open Settings > Software update > Download and install.

If you are transferring an eSIM between phones, update both devices before trying again. Samsung says supported eSIM transfers require both devices to be updated and connected to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

4. Confirm That You Are Using the Correct Activation Method

The activation process depends on the phone and carrier.

iPhone

Open:

Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service > Add eSIM

Depending on the carrier, you may be able to:

  • Scan a carrier QR code.
  • Transfer the number from another iPhone.
  • Use carrier activation.
  • Activate through the carrier's app.
  • Enter activation details manually.

Google Pixel

Open:

Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM

If the Pixel does not detect the plan automatically, Google recommends contacting the carrier to activate the eSIM and confirm the device ID.

Samsung Galaxy

Open:

Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM

Samsung Galaxy phones may support QR-code activation, carrier discovery, carrier push activation, or transfer from another phone. The available options depend on the model, software version, and carrier.

5. Request a New QR Code if the Activation Code Fails

Your carrier or eSIM provider issues the QR code. The phone may show an activation error if the code belongs to the wrong plan, cannot be read, or has already been assigned to another device.

Ask the carrier to:

  • Confirm that the QR code belongs to your phone number and plan.
  • Check whether the eSIM profile was assigned to another device.
  • Cancel the failed activation if necessary.
  • Issue a replacement QR code or activation link.
  • Confirm that your IMEI and EID are registered correctly.

Do not repeatedly delete and reinstall an eSIM that is already working. If you remove an active profile, the carrier may need to issue a replacement before the phone can download it again.

6. Turn the eSIM Line Off and On

The eSIM profile may download successfully but remain disabled.

On iPhone

Open:

Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service

Select the eSIM line, turn on This Line, then restart the iPhone. Apple also recommends turning the line off and on when the number appears in settings but the network does not connect.

On Samsung Galaxy

Open:

Settings > Connections > SIM manager

Select the eSIM and make sure it is enabled. Samsung says "Emergency calls only" can appear when there is no active eSIM or physical SIM.

On Google Pixel

Open:

Settings > Network & internet > SIMs

Select the eSIM and confirm that it is enabled. If the profile is present but cannot connect, retry the setup once. Contact the carrier if the problem continues. Google recommends contacting the carrier for persistent eSIM transfer or setup problems.

7. Check Whether the Problem Is Activation or Mobile Data

An eSIM can be installed without providing mobile data. These are separate problems:

  • The eSIM will not install: The cause is usually device compatibility, an invalid QR code, no internet connection, or carrier provisioning.
  • The eSIM installs but shows no service: The cause is more likely line activation, carrier provisioning, network availability, or an incorrect SIM setting.
  • Calls work but data does not: Check which line is selected for mobile data and follow the carrier's roaming or APN instructions.
  • A travel eSIM works only at the destination: Some travel plans connect only after reaching a supported network or country.

If the eSIM appears in the phone's settings but has no signal after a restart, the carrier needs to confirm that the line is active on its network.

8. Contact Your Carrier With the Required Information

If the steps above do not work, the carrier usually needs to fix the account or network activation. Provide:

  • The exact error message.
  • Your phone number.
  • Your account PIN or password.
  • Your phone's IMEI.
  • Your phone's EID.
  • The phone model and country where it was purchased.
  • Whether you are transferring from another device.
  • Whether you bought the eSIM from the carrier or a travel eSIM provider.

Apple recommends gathering the phone number, account credentials, IMEI, and EID before contacting the network provider.

Ask the carrier to confirm that:

  1. The plan supports eSIM.
  2. The phone's IMEI and EID are attached to the correct account.
  3. The device is unlocked.
  4. The eSIM profile has not already been downloaded elsewhere.
  5. The old SIM or previous eSIM was released after a transfer.
  6. The network has completed provisioning for the line.

Bottom Line

An eSIM that will not install usually needs a compatible phone, a working internet connection, a valid activation code, or carrier provisioning. An eSIM that installs but shows no service points more strongly to line activation, network access, or SIM settings. If the local checks do not solve the problem, the carrier or eSIM provider must inspect the account and may need to issue a replacement activation code.
